Thinking of buying my book, Monkey Arkwright? Well, don’t do it just yet.

An unusual thing for an author to say of his book, and a technique that you probably won’t find in Marketing 101 but bear with me, friends, because I’m trying to do you a favour. I may be a new author craving sales, but I also like to be honest and upfront with my potential readers. Let me explain …

If I was to draw you a graph plotting the sales of Monkey Arkwright, it wouldn’t be very exciting. I’ve been grasping for a suitable adjective to describe what you’d see: as flat as The Netherlands would cover it; an empty dusty plain might conjure up a cinematic vision, one in which there are more people than sales of my book. Let’s just say that since Christmas Eve, I’ve not had a single sale – not a sausage as we might say in the north.

So, now it’s time to bring out the big guns and slap some cold hard cash down on the counter. (The truth isn’t quite so dramatic, as it involves a PayPal transaction). Some might think that having published a book, the money only flows one way: into my pocket. But for the indie author, it’s not as simple as that, and as I await my first royalty payment from Amazon, I have decided to pay for a promotion.

Part of the deal with Amazon KDP is that for every 90 days that you are signed up, you’re allowed to offer your book for free for 5 of these days. Like a greedy uncle making his way down a wedding buffet table, I’ve decided to gobble up my entire allocation of free days in one gulp. In order to maximise the effectiveness of this promotion, I have sent the aforementioned cash the way of BookRunes.com, who will, in turn, unleash the glorious news of my free book on various reading communities.

Hang on a minute, you might say, what’s the point of that? Are you giving your book away and paying for the privilege? You must be mad! If that’s what you think, you’re in good company, because that’s pretty much along the lines of what my wife said. (Remember the scenes in “Catch The Pigeon” where Dick Dastardly picked up the phone and got an earful from the General? That’s a fairly good depiction of the scene). The reason for such an extravagant expense is that hopefully, I will get people downloading my book in the hundreds or if I’m lucky the thousands. From this scattering of seeds, I’m hoping that some will land on fertile soil and yield a review or two. You see, reviews are gold to the indie author (I know I’ve said this before, but I’ve decided that this is going to be my catchphrase – not quite up to the high watermark of Bruce Forsythisms, but it’ll suffice until something better occurs to me).

Monkey Arkwright will be FREE from January 18th to 22nd. So, if you feel like spreading the good news to your friends, associates and anywhere else that might do me some good, then I’d be very grateful.

  1. I’m glad some people think so Craig. It’s a tough world out there and I’m finding out that writing a book is the easy bit. Still, I’m undaunted with a few tricks still up my sleeve.
